Estudió Economía en la Universidad de Barcelona y se formó como fotógrafo en el Centro Internacional de Fotografía con el fotógrafo catalán Manel Esclusa, durante su exilio en España en los años 80.El trabajo de Marcelo procura comunicar a las nuevas generación la experiencia del terrorismo de estado en Argentina de una manera diferente, basada en la emoción y en la experiencia sensible, para que esta transmisión genere un conocimiento profundo y real, basado en el diálogo entre las distintas generaciones afectadas por las consecuencias de la dictadura militar.

During his exile in Bercelona in the 80s, Marcelo Brodsky, an economics graduate from the University of Barcelona, was trained as a photographer at the International Center of Photography, Barcelona, by the Catalonian photographer Manel Esclusa.Brodsky´s work seeks to communicate to the new generations the experience of the state terrorism in Argentine in a different way, based on emotion and sensate experience, such that the transmission of it will generate a real and profound knowledge based on dialogue among the different generation affected by the consequences of the military dictatorship.

INVITED PHOTOGRAPHER ALEJANDRO CARTAGENA RECOMMENDS:3 Miradas Mexicanas por Mexicanas

El año 2012 comienza. El mundo se acaba. Por eso comenzaremos el año con un mega post sobre fotógrafas mexicanas. Livia Corona, Daniela Garza e Ingrid Hernández. Tres miradas disímiles sobre el pedazo de tierra llamado México. Primero veamos las imágenes de Livia Corona. Livia (ganadora de la beca Guggenheim Latina) tiene ya en su portafolio una serie de grandes trabajos. El que presentaremos aquí es el denominado Dos Millones de Casas para México.

Un proyecto contundente que denota una nueva dirección en la fotografía Mexicana. Por varios años Livia viajo por diferentes ciudades documentando las particularidades de las periferias urbanas donde se puede observar la forma en que el entorno topográfico se ha transformado.

Su interés no solo radica en mostrar el entorno general sino además presentarnos las diferentes formas de cómo estas dos millones de casas seriales son transformadas por sus nuevos habitantes.

Una forma de documentación de la metamorfosis habitacional que permite lidiar con la esterilidad de estas nuevas ciudades mexicanas que más que brindar un progreso, pareciera en ocasiones condenar a sus habitantes a una vida de problemas.

Segundo veamos el trabajo llamado Fractura de Daniela Garza. Oriunda de Monterrey, Daniela ha venido desarrollando un proyecto que nos presenta con una perspectiva un tanto distinta de las casas mexicanas de Livia. Monterrey, capital del estado de Nuevo León, al norte de México, ha caído víctima de la violencia entre carteles de la droga y las fuerzas municipales y federales. Esto ha generado un tipo de éxodo entre los habitantes de algunas zonas del área metropolitana.

Daniela se tomó la tarea de documentar los espacios residuales de este fenómeno, presentándonos imágenes de espacios donde el tiempo parece haberse detenido por completo.

Muchos de los que han decidido emigrar, ya sea por miedo o por una amenaza directa, han abandonado sus vidas por completo. Perdiendo contacto con familiares y amigos para así “garantizar” su nuevo escondite en EUA u otro estado de la República Mexicana. Es así que estas casas terminan siendo también víctimas de la violencia.

Por último veamos el trabajo Tijuana Comprimida de Ingrid Hernández. Ingrid, una fotógrafa, educadora y ganadora de varios premios por sus series fotográficas, trabajó por un año en el asentamiento Nueva Esperanza en su ciudad natal de Tijuana.

Allí exploró la forma en que estos espacios informales son construidos o ensamblados por personas que han llegado de otras partes de México y de Latinoamérica. En su proceso de realización se dio a la tarea de entrevistar a los habitantes y así conocer algunas de las historias detrás de dichos espacios.

Su ensayo fotográfico parece exaltar la habilidad de supervivencia del ser humano así como la necesidad de una espacio propio. Los materiales usados en estas construcciones connotan el peregrinaje de sus habitantes para lograr un lugar llamado casa.

Pareciera irónico que estas tres realidades se den en un mismo país y en un mismo tiempo. Hay los que transforman lo poquito que tienen, los que abandonan todo y los que con migajas construyen su “sueño americano”. Una realidad alentadora y al mismo tiempo cruel con la cual nos enfrentamos a diario pero que en ocasiones no deseamos ver. Lo bueno es que existen estas tres grandes fotógrafas que lo han grabado en sus imágenes mostrándonos así su opinión sobre estos diferentes Méxicos.

3 Mexican Looks by Mexican Women

The year 2012 begins. The world ends. That´s why we´ll start the year with a mega post on Mexican photographers. Livia Corona, Daniela Garza and Ingrid Hernandez. Three different looks on the piece of land called Mexico.

First we see the images of Livia Corona.
Livia (winner of a Guggenheim Latin Fellowship) has already in her portfolio a number of large jobs. The one presented here is called Two Million Homes for Mexico.
It is an innovative project that denotes a new direction in Mexican photography. For several years she traveled to different cities documenting the characteristics of urban neighborhoods where people can observe how the topographical environment has changed.
Her interest is not only showing the general environment but also to introduce us to different forms of how these two million serial homes are transformed by their newcomers.The way of documenting the housing metamorphosis is that it allows dealing with the sterility of these new Mexican cities rather than providing a progress that sometimes seems to condemn its people to a life of problems.

Second we see the work called fracture by Daniela Garza .
A native of Monterrey, Daniela has developed a project that presents us with a somewhat different perspective of Mexican households from Livia. Monterrey, capital of Nuevo Leon in northern Mexico, has become a victim of violence between drug cartels and municipal and federal forces. This has generated a kind of exodus among the habitants of some parts of the metropolitan area.Daniela took the task of documenting the residual spaces of this phenomenon, presenting to us images of spaces where time seems to have stopped completely.Many who have chosen to emigrate, either by fear or a direct threat, have abandon their lives completely. Losing touch with family and friends in order to "guarantee" their new hiding place in the United States or another state in Mexico. Thus, these homes also end up being victims of violence.

Finally we see the work Compressed Tijuana by Ingrid Hernandez .
Ingrid, a photographer, educator and winner of several awards for her photographic series, worked for a year in the New Hope settlement,her hometown of Tijuana.There she explored how these informal spaces are constructed or assembled by people who have come from other parts of Mexico and Latin America. In the process of completion, she began the task of interviewing people and getting to know some of the stories behind these spaces.Her photography essay seems to exalt the ability of human survival and the need for personal space. The materials used in these constructions connote the pilgrimage of the people to achieve a place called home.It seems ironic that these three realities are given in the same country and at the same time.

There are those who transform with the little things they have, the ones that drop everything and the ones that with crumbs built their "American dream". An encouraging reality and at the same time cruel. A reality, which we face every day but sometimes, we do not want to see.

The good news is that there are these three great photographers who have recorded this in their images showing us their opinion on these different Mexicos.

HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY:Serguéi Mijáilovich Prokudin-Gorskii

Serguéi Mijáilovich Prokudin-Gorskii(1863-1944) dedicó su carrera al avance de la fotografía. Nació en Funikova Gora, en el Óblast de Vladímir, Rusia en 1863 y se formó como químico. De sus resultados surgieron las primeras patentes de películas positivas en colores y de proyección de películas con movimiento. Hacia 1905, Prokudin-Gorskii concibió el gran proyecto de documentar, con fotografías en colores, la enorme diversidad de historia, cultura y avances del Imperio ruso, para ser utilizado en las escuelas del imperio.Su proceso utilizaba una cámara que tomaba una serie de fotos monocromáticas en secuencia muy rápida, cada una a través de un filtro de color diferente. Al proyectar las tres fotos monocromáticas con luz del color adecuado era posible reconstruir la escena con los colores originales. Sin embargo, no disponía de mecanismo para realizar impresiones de las fotos así obtenidas.

Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii(1863-1944) devoted his career to the advancement of photography. Born in Funikova Gora, in the Vladimir Oblast, Russia in 1863 and trained as a chemist. From their findings are the first patents for color positive films and films with movement. By 1905, Prokudin-Gorskii conceived the great project to document, with color photographs, the enormous diversity of history, culture and progress of the Russian Empire, to be used in schools of the empire.In his process he used a camera that took a series of monochrome photos in very quick sequence, each through a different color filter.By projecting all three monochrome pictures in the appropriate color light made it possible to reconstruct the scene with the original colors. However, no mechanism for printing the pictures was obtained.

Leandro Katz es un fotógrafo de Argentina quien vendrá a impartir una charla el jueves 2 de febrero a La Fototeca. Aqui esta la entrevista que nos dio para el blog.

Antes de empezar queremos agradecerte la oportunidad de entrevistarte. Primero quisiera preguntarte cómo empezaste en la fotografía?

Mi interés en la fotografía comienza en mi adolescencia creciendo cerca de la fotógrafa argentina Grete Stern y su familia. Luego crece aun mas cuando la veo trabajar en el Chaco argentino, fotografiando a las comunidades indígenas de la región. Comienzo a trabajar seriamente cuando me radico en Nueva York y logro comprar unas cámaras decentes. Eso es ya en los setenta, cuando mis trabajos comienzan a florecer.

¿Qué es lo más importante para ti a la hora de tomar o hacer una fotografía?

En ese período, comienzo a diferenciar a la actividad del fotógrafo con un rigor conceptual entre la caza y la agricultura... Es decir, no salgo con la cámara a ‘cazar’ imágenes, sino que me propongo un proceso dentro del cual decido dedicarme a una idea o una imagen específica. De allí surgen los ‘proyectos’ dentro de los cuales me limito a fotografiar únicamente lo relacionado con un tema, sujeto o concepto. Es decir, es una investigación sobre la naturaleza de la fotografía.

¿De donde vienen la inspiración para realizar tus fotos?

Surge de una reflexión teórica que ha sido internalizada y que por lo general tiene que ver con el lenguaje, la historia y el poder de la representación.

Dentro de tus proyectos destacan particularmente los alfabetos, de dónde nació este proyecto.

Encuentras alguna relación entre Camnitzer y tu obra?

Los alfabetos vienen de un interés en el lenguaje, especialmente en los lenguajes antiguos que incorporan la imagen en su estructura. De alli mi interés en los jeroglíficos, especialmente mi atracción a los códices y estelas maya.Camnitzer es un antiguo colega. Le gusta mi obra, y creo que ha escrito sobre ella.

¿A que fotógrafos o artistas admiras y por qué?

La lista es enorme, pero la mayoría, como Cartier Bresson, son –en mi clasificación conceptual– cazadores de imágenes. Por eso me gustan mucho mas los fotógrafos que inventan procesos y posturas y que investigan como por ejemplo Muybridge.

¿En que proyectos estas trabajando actualmente?

 Desde que volví a radicarme en Buenos Aires estoy recuperando –con cierto asombro– trabajos que había dejado de lado hace mucho tiempo. Y por cierto estoy filmando y editando nuevos proyectos. Me gusta mucho el ensayo documental como género.

¿Cuál crees que sea la importancia de las nuevas tecnologías durante el proceso creativo?

Me llevo bien con las nuevas tecnologías, con la fotografía y el cine digital. Sin embargo, luego de haber trabajado durante tantos años en fotografía y cine analógico, veo el enorme abismo que hay entre estas experiencias. Por cierto no extraño para nada los vapores tóxicos del antiguo cuarto oscuro, aunque debo reconocer que había algo de magia y de alquimia en los rituales del fotógrafo que trabajaba con lo ‘mojado’. Y creo que no cambiaría jamás la experiencia de estar en medio de la noche fotografiando ruinas mayas con la técnica de flash abierto, por la alternativa de estar sentado trabajando en formato digital...!

 ¿Qué consejos les puedes dar a los nuevos fotógrafos o fotógrafos que están empezando?

Pensar, leer, mirar...

¿Cómo ha sido tu experiencia en Guatemala?

Mis experiencias en Guatemala fueron muchas y de muchos viajes y muchos años de trabajar en tu maravilloso pais. Una experiencia que comienza en 1963 y luego sigue cuando había que llegar a Tikal en canoa, para ser retomada mas tarde con el Proyecto Catherwood, y aun mas tarde con las filmaciones en Quiriguá y las plantaciones bananeras. Me alegra tanto volver a estar por alli pronto, y con mis nietos!

Leandro Katz is a photographer from Argentina who is giving a talk on Thursday, February 2 at La Fototeca.

Here is the interview he gave us for the blog.

Before we start, we would like to thank you for the opportunity to interview you, it´s a great pleasure.First I'd like to ask you when did you become interested in photography?

My interest in photography began in my teen years growing up in Argentina close photographer Grete Stern and her family. Then it grew even more when I saw her work in the Argentine Chaco,while photographing indigenous communities in the region.I started working seriously in photography when I settled in New York and managed to buy a decent cameras. That was in the seventies, when my work began to flourish.

What is most important to you at the time of taking or makinga photograph?

During this period, I began to differentiate the activity of the photographer with aconceptual rigor between hunting and farming ... I mean I don´t go out with the camera to 'hunt' images, but I plan a processwithin which i decide to devote myself to an idea or to a specific image.From that point the 'projects' arises but I just limit myself to photograph only the things related to a topic, subject or concept. That is,an investigation into the nature of photography.

Where does the inspiration come for your photos?

It arises from a theoretical reflection that has been internalized and that usually has to do with language, history and the power ofrepresentation.

Within your projects stands out particularly thealphabets, where was this project born? Do you find any relationship with Camnitzer an your work?

The alphabets came from an interest in language, especially in theancient languages that incorporate the image in its structure. From there I find my interest in hieroglyphs, especially in the Mayan codices and stelae.Camnitzer is an old colleague. He likes my work, and I think he has writtenabout it.

What photographers or artists admire you and why?

The list is huge, but I mainly like Cartier Bresson,although, in myconceptual classification he is an image-hunters. That’s why I likemuch more photographers who invent processes and positions and turn their work into an investigation, like Muybridge did.

What projects are you working on now?

Since returning to settle in Buenos Aires I’m recovering-with some wonderment,work that I had put aside a long time ago. And at the same time I'm shooting and editing new projects. I like very much the documentary essay as a genre.

What do you think is the importance of new technologiesduring the creative process?
I get along well with new technologies, digital photography and filmdigital. However, after having worked for many years in analog photography and film, I see that there is a huge abiss between theseexperiences. I certainly don’t miss anything about the toxic fumes of theold dark room, though I must admit there was somemagic and alchemy in the rituals of the photographer who worked with wet materials. However, I would never change the experience of being inmiddle of the night photographing Mayan ruins with the technique of an open flash, for the alternative of working on digital format in front of the computer.

What advice would you give new photographers orphotographers who are starting out?

How was your experience in Guatemala?

My experiences in Guatemala were several from many trips andmany years of working in your wonderful country. An experience thatbegan in 1963 and that continued when I had to get to Tikal in a taken up later with the Catherwood Project, andeven later with filming in Quirigua and in the banana plantations. I'm so glad to be back in Guatemala soon, and with mygrandchildren!

Me gusta la idea de la no-lineal de la vida. Vidas que no van desde el nacimiento hasta la muerte pasando las rutas tradicionales: escuela-trabajo - universidad-niños-jubilación-nietos, etcTambién me gusta la fotografía que sigue una trayectoria no lineal.

Y creo que es por eso que me siento atraída por la obra de la fotógrafa Sarah Stolfa.Ella es más conocida por su serie de los Regulares, las imágenes que tomó de los clientes que frecuentaban el bar donde trabajaba en ese momento, pero las imágenes que más me llaman la atención son de su serie Untitled. Ella comenzó su trabajo cuando estaba en la escuela de posgrado en Yale, y continuó después de salir y emprender un viaje a través de los Estados Unidos en un autobús Greyhound.

Algunas de las imágenes son fabricadas y otras no lo son. La verdad de la imagen no era lo importante para ella. Ella tenía una idea que quería fotografiar, alguien que consigue un baile en las piernas o un derby de demolición. Ella iba a buscar estas cosas, ya fuera haciendo un montaje o tropezandose con estas situaciones. Me gusta la idea de que una imagen pueda mantener su propio significado y que siedo parte de una serie no significa que tiene que ser igual que las otras fotografías de la serie.

Sarah es un personaje interesante. En un momento ella estaba entrenando para ser boxeadora, era un mesera, y estaba aprendiendo de fotografía. Ahora su vida se ve un poco diferente, es madre y directora del Centro de Arte de Filadelfia, pero Sarah todavía representa para mí el ideal al azar de las imágenes hasta su final, lo cual es lo que yo tanto admiro.

I like the idea of non-linear lives. Lives that don’t go from birth to death following traditional paths: school-college- job-kids-retirement-grandkids, etc.I also like photography that follows a non-linear path.

Which I think is why I am drawn to the work of photographer Sarah Stolfa.She is most well known for her series the Regulars, pictures she took of the patrons who frequented the bar where she worked at the time, but the images that most call to me are from her Untitled series. She started this work when she was at graduate school at Yale, and it continued after she left and set out on a journey on across the United States on a greyhound bus.

Some of the images are fabricated others are not. The truth of the image was not what was important to her. She would have an idea that she wanted to photograph- someone getting a lap dance or a demolition derby. So she would go and find those things, either staging it or stumbling upon them.

I like the idea that an image can hold its own and that being part of a series doesn’t mean that it has to be just like the other photographs in the series.

Sarah, in and of herself, is an interesting character. At one point she was training to be a boxer, she was a bartender, and learning photography. Now her life looks a little different, a mother and the director of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, but Sarah still embodies to me the haphazard ideal of following ideas to their end that I so admire.

A REVISTA is an online magazine, with a theme by issue. Conceived, designed and produced by modobulb blog and independent publisher. Presents 5 to 6 portfolios per issue of Brazilian and foreign artists accompanied by texts and interviews. We aim to create a starting point for discussions around contemporary issues, using photography as the main vehicle of communication. HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY: Lady Clementina Hawarden

Clementina Maude, Viscountess Hawarden (junio 1, 1822 a enero 19, 1865), comúnmente conocida como Lady Clementina Hawarden era una fotógrafa de retrato de la década de 1860. Se inicio en la fotografía a finales de 1857 o principios de 1858, mientras vivía en la finca de la familia de su esposo en Dundrum, Irlanda. Su traslado a Londres en 1859 le permitió establecer un estudio en su casa elegante de South Kensington. Allí tomo muchos de los retratos que la caracterizaron y por los cuales es recordada,muchos de los cuales incluyen a sus hijos.La vizcondesa Hawarden expuso por primera vez en la exposición anual de la Sociedad Fotográfica de Londres en enero de 1863 y fue elegido miembro de la Sociedad. Su trabajo fue ampliamente reconocido por su "excelencia artística", ganando la medalla de composición en la exposición.Lewis Carroll, también fotógrafo, era un admirador del trabajo de Hawarden. Una coleccion de sus retratos se encuentran en el Victoria and Albert Museum, Londres.

Mathew B. Brady (ca. 1822 – January 15, 1896) was one of the most celebrated 19th century American photographers, best known for his portraits of celebrities and his documentation of the American Civil War. He is credited with being the father of photojournalism.[1]Mathew Brady took thousands of photos of American Civil War scenes. Much of what is known today about the Civil War comes from these photos. There are thousands of photos in the National Archives taken by Brady and his associates, Alexander Gardner, George Barnard, and Timothy O'Sullivan. The photographs include Lincoln, Grant, and common soldiers in camps and battlefields. The images provide a pictorial cross reference of American Civil War history. Brady was not able to photograph actual battle scenes as the photographic equipment in those days was still in the infancy of its development and required that a subject be still in order for a clear photo to be produced.

Presenciar las imágenes de Melba Arellano es como transportarte a una dimensión tan real que pareciera ficción, o al menos así me sentí cuando las vi por primera vez en México D.F. durante un taller en Gimnasio de Arte. Melba, a través de sus viajes a regiones de su infancia en las carreteras de Acapulco-Zihuatanejo, ha ido registrando espacios, personajes y recuerdos que bien le sirven a ella de reconciliación con su pasado, pero que a su vez nos sirven a nosotros espectadores como una pastillita de reconocimiento de lo poco que conocemos de la vida del México contemporáneo y sus carreteras. Melba quiere centrar su “exploración fotográfica en la vida cotidiana; aquel espacio que para mí representa los lugares físicos y psíquicos en el que nos desenvolvemos”.
No puedo no pensar en ella como una joven Diane Arbus en búsqueda de esas cosas que la hacían “sentir”. Sentir empatía, asombro, felicidad y admiración por estos lugares y personas que sobreviven a un México duro y a veces desgraciado con estos. Melba también comenta que busca “hacer visible como las personas moldean sus espacios y viceversa, cómo las comunidades moldean a quienes las habitan”. Lo que puede resultar de estos espacios pareciera escalofriante; qué personas son las creadas por lugares que existen sólo por necesidad, casualidad, supervivencia y muchas veces por olvido.
Definitivamente algunas posibles respuestas están en las imágenes de Melba.

Witnessing Melba Arellanos images is like transporting you to a dimension so real that seems fiction, or at least that´s how I felt when I first saw them in Mexico City during a workshop at Gimnasio de Arte ,Melba, through her travels to regions of his childhood on the road of Acapulco-Zihuatanejo, has been recording spaces, characters and memories that will serve her well for reconciliation with her past, but also they serve us,the viewers,as a little pill of recognition of how little we know of life in contemporary Mexico and its roads. Melba wants to focus his "photographic exploration into everyday life for me that space is physically and mentally places in which we live."
I can not not think of it as a young Diane Arbus in search of those things that made her "feel". Melba wants to center her photographic exploration into everyday life, that space that to me represents the physically and mentally places in which we develop ourselves. " To me, its impossible not to think of it as a young Diane Arbus in search of those things that made her "feel".Feel empathy, wonder, joy and admiration for these places and people who survive a hard and sometimes unfortunate Mexico with them. Melba also says that she seeks to "make visible how people shape their areas and vice versa, how communities shape their inhabitants." What may result from these spaces seem creepy, that people are created in places that exist only out of necessity, chance, survival, and many times forgotten.

Inka Lindergård was born 1985 in Finland and Niclas Holmström was born 1984 in Sweden. They have lived and worked together in Stockholm, Sweden, since 2007.“The two artists, who simply call themselves Inka and Niclas, alter the landscape only briefly with slight interventions, according to their own very personal visual concepts. Johan Rosenmunthe es un fotógrafo de Dinamarca que vino a La Fototeca a impartir el taller "don't take pictures, make pictures". Aqui esta la entrevista que nos dio para el blog.

Antes de empezar queremos agradecerte por la oportunidad de entrevistarte. Primero quisiera preguntarte ¿Como empezaste en la fotografía?
Mientras estudiaba, me sentía aburrido de todos los libros y creo que la primera fascinación estuvo relacionada con los aspectos técnicos de la cámara análoga.

Puedes hablarnos acerca de tu proyecto "Transmutaciones"
Claro, es un tipo de investigación personal acerca de la distorsión entre los animales y los humanos. Yo veo imágenes como los descendientes de los experimentos con los de los fluidos que nos mantienen vivos. Algunos pueden que vivan y otros pueden que mueran, pero esta pequeña librería mantiene un seguimiento de los resultados. El producto final son 64 páginas en un libro que viene en una caja de madera, una edición de 100.

Con las nuevas tecnologías, a donde crees que va la fotografía?
Hacia ser entendida, mas que solo otra manera de hacer imágenes y no ser estrechamente enlazada con la discusión acerca de la objetividad y de la documentación de la realidad, eso espero.

¿Que es lo mas importante para ti a la hora de tomar o hacer una fotografía?
Eso depende de muchas cosas diferentes, pero en general yo diría que las imagen apoya al proyecto en lugar de se sean solo una fotografía bonita.

¿Qué consejos les puedes dar a los nuevos fotógrafos o fotógrafos que están empezando?
A mi me parece que el error mas común que hacen los artistas nuevos es que hablan mucho y trabajan muy poco. Así que el consejo, el cual me tengo que recordar a mi mismo a veces, es no pensar mucho acerca de lo que puede funcionar o poner excusas por no terminar proyectos. Todos los proyectos toman tiempo y 90% de ese tiempo es trabajo duro.

¿En que proyectos estas trabajando actualmente?
Estoy trabajando en mi siguiente exhibicion en Copenhagen en Marzo del 2012.Algo con piedras…

¿Cómo ha sido tu experiencia en Guatemala?
El viaje al volcan fue como caminar en la luna….

¿De donde vienen la inspiración para realizar tus fotos?
Todavía estoy tratando de descifrarlo….

El estar consciente de tus decisiones. Ninguna tecnología o proceso es mejor que la otra, pero tienes que estar consciente de tus decisiones a la hora de terminar productos o proyectos que sean coherentes y convincentes.

Before we start, we would like to thank you for the opportunity to interview you,it´s a great pleasure.First I'd like to ask you when did you become interested in photography?

I was studying and got bored of all the books. I think the first fascination was related to the technical aspects of the analog camera...

Can tell us About Your Project Transmutations?
Shure, it's sort of a personal investigation of the distinction between animals and humans. I see the images as the offspring of experiments with the fluids that keeps us alive. Some might live and some might die, but this small library keeps track of the outcome. The final product is a 64 page unbound book that comes in a wooden box - edition of 100.

With new technologies, where do you think photography is going?
Towards being understood more as just another way to make images and not so closely linked to the discussion about objectivity and documentation of reality, I hope.

What is most important thing or aspect to you when you take or make a picture?
This depends on so many different things, but generally I would say that the image supports the project rather that just being a beautiful picture.

What advice would you give to new photographers or photographers who are starting out?
It seems to me that the most common problem for new artists is too much talking and too little actual work. So the advice - which I still have to remind myself very often - must be to not think so much about what could work or make excuses for not making a finished product. All projects take time, and 90% of that time is hard work.

What projects are you working now?
I'm working on my next soloexhibition in Copenhagen in March 2012. Something with rocks...

How was your experience in Guatemala?
The trip to the volcano was like walking on the moon…

Where did the inspiration come for your pictures?
I am still trying to figure it out...What photographers or artists do you admire and why?I admire aspects of projects more than the artists behind. I recently rediscovered Theo Jansen and his Strandbeest - http://www.strandbeest.com/

What do you think is the importance of new technologies during the creative process?
To be aware of your choices. No technology or process is better than the other, but you have to be aware of your choices to make a finished product that seems coherent and convincing.

Since its foundation in 1981, the Fotohof in Salzburg has been an important center with widespread activities. A group of photographers and enthusiasts gathered and worked together to create a space for presenting and discussing art photography; this ambitious concept succeded by founding an “association to support author photographers” (Verein zur Förderung der Autorenfotografie) and because the first Gallery space was in a courtyard, the more descriptive name FOTO-HOF was created; since then, for 26 years, this “collective” structure has been the same and Fotohof has been working in the field of national and international art photography. Desde el año 2001 los paisajes periféricos de un gran numero de ciudades mexicanas comenzaron una rápida transformación que hoy podemos ver traducidas en las imágenes de Jorge Taboada. Jorge siempre ha estado preocupado por la visualidad de la ciudad tanto en términos arquitectónicos como fotográficos y es por esto que en este nuevo proyecto no sólo nos habla de la situación espacio-social de los lugares que observamos sino que es claramente su preocupación visual lo que nos permite ver, de manera alarmante, la devastación y expansión de la nueva ciudad mexicana. Jorge describe estos lugares como “casas con espacios mínimos formando un paisaje visualmente confortante pero angustiante, (con una alta) despersonalización de la vivienda y estandarización de necesidades y extinción de la individualidad”. Una descripción dura pero cercana a la realidad de lugares que de una u otra manera han ido tragándose lo que quedaba de una sociedad mexicana que al parecer minuto a minuto desaparece entre paisajes y situaciones caóticas.

Since 2001, peripheral landscapes of a large number of Mexican cities began a rapid transformation that we see today translated into images of Jorge Taboada. Jorge has always been concerned about the visual quality of the city both in terms of architecture and photography and that is why this new project not only speaks of the space-social situation of the places you observe but also it is clear that visual concerns allows us to see, so alarming, devastation and spread of the new Mexican city. Jorge describes these places as "houses with minimal space forming a comforting but distressing visual landscape (with high)depersonalization and standardization of housing with needs and extinction of individuality." A hard description but close to the harsh reality of places that one way or another have been gobbling up the remains of a Mexican society that apparently disappears minute after minute through landscapes and chaotic situations.

Nació en 1895 en Bácsborsard, Hungría meridional.Aunque el artista húngaro Moholy-Nagy no se consideraba a sí mismo en realidad fotógrafo, sino pintor, hoy es considerado como un innovador y como uno de los pioneros de la fotografía de los años veinte.En 1923, fue llamado por Walter Gropius a la Bauhaus de Wreimar. Allí se hizo cargo primeramente del taller de trabajos en metal, y más tarde pasó a dirigir el curso preparatorio, cuando Johannes Itten decidió abandonar la Bauhaus. Si bien en aquella época no existía una clase especifica de fotografía –que sólo fue creada con el nombramiento de Walter Peterhans, en 1929-, Moholy-Nagy es considerado como un precursor en ese campo y se convirtió en el representante por excelencia de la fotografía Bauhaus.Su publicación “Pintura, Fotografía, Film”, aparecida en 1925, y que constituye el octavo volumen de los “Libros de la Bauhaus”, es uno de los principales pilares de esa reputación. Fue el primer texto orientador publicado por la Bauhaus sobre el tema fotografía. En el se proponía esclarecer las relaciones entre la pintura y la fotografía.

La Indie Photobook Library es exactamente lo que su nombre indica, es una biblioteca de gestión independiente de los álbumes de fotos que están hechos independientemente. Los libros son auto publicados de alguna forma. Auto-publicado en estos días puede significar una gran variedad de cosas, desde zines (revistas pequeñas) hasta empaques hechos a mano para envolver los artes impresos que así lo piden los servicios como Blurb y Magcloud. Básicamente los libros en la biblioteca son trabajos que los artistas creían fuertemente que tenían que ser publicados como libros de una manera u otra.

La biblioteca contiene una colección de estos libros hechos por los artistas y trata de darles tanto un lugar para vivir fuera de las colecciones personales y también una forma para que el público tenga acceso a ellos en todo el mundo.

No puedo recordar si he visto esta biblioteca independiente en línea primero o en persona. Son experiencias distintas pero interesante. Me llamó la atención la forma en que se presentan los libros en la web.

Cada libro es fotografiado al lado de una computadora portátil. Al darnos un objeto fijo, se puede juzgar el tamaño del libro en sí. No sólo están mostrando el tamaño, sino también hay algo irónico sobre el uso de una computadora. El mundo se mueve cada vez más hacia lo digital (kindles, iPads, iPhones). La gente está leyendo cada vez menos de papel, sin embargo, todavía anhelan lo táctil. Todavía quieren ver fotografías sin un resplandor detrás de ellos.

La propia biblioteca se mueve entre los eventos de la fotografía nacional e internacional, permitiendo el acceso a una gran audiencia. Acercarse a la biblioteca física es una experiencia maravillosa, ya que son capaces de obtener una idea de cómo muchos proyectos interesantes están siendo perseguidos por fotógrafos. Los propios libros son una manera de ver la forma y secuencia que el artista eligió personalmente.

Algún día el fundador Larissa Leclair espera poder albergar la colección en una institución más permanente para que haya acceso a ella en los próximos años.

The Indie Photobook Library (iPL) is exactly what its name states; it is an independently run library of photobooks that are also indepently made. The books are self-published in some form. Self-published these days can mean a variety of things, from zines (small magazines) to hand bound clothe covered singular works of art to print on demand services like Blurb and Magcloud. Basically the books in the library are works that the artists themselves felt strongly enough about that they needed to make a book one way or another.

The library houses a collection of these self-made books and tries to give them both a place to live outside of personal collections and a way for an audience to have access to them all over the world.

I can’t remember if I saw The Indie Photobook Library (iPL) first online or in person. They are separate but interesting experiences. I was struck by they way they showcase the books on the website. Scientific in the use of scale. The books are each photographed next to the corner of a laptop. By giving us a fixed object, we can judge the size of the book itself. Not only are they showing the size, but there is something ironic about using a computer. The world is moving more and more towards the digital (kindles, ipads, iphones). People are reading less and less from paper, yet we still crave the tactile. We still want to see photographs without a glow behind them.

The library itself moves between photography events nationally and internationally, allowing access to a large audience. Approaching the library physically is a wonderful experience because you are able to get a glimpse of how many interesting projects are being pursued by photographers. The books themselves are a way to see the form and sequence the artist chose personally.

Some day the founder Larissa Leclair hopes to house the collection in a more permanent institution so there will be access for years to come.

Las dos primeras ediciones en 2007 y 2009 presentó un total de 116 fotógrafos de más de 30 países diferentes.La tercera edición de Photoquai se llevó a cabo del 13 de septiembre al 11 de noviembre donde se mostraron el trabajo de 46 fotógrafos de 29 países.La exposición se realizó a orillas de Sena, en el jardín del museo del Quai Branly y en la Torre Eiffel, así como en once galerías e instituciones asociadas en París.

Este libro es una colección de aproximadamente 135 fotografías más significativas de la carrera de Mary Ellen Mark hasta la fecha, seleccionados por el fotógrafo y cuidadosamente editado y diseñado con su colaboración. This book is a collection of approximately 135 of the most significant photographs of Mary Ellen Mark's career to date, selected by the photographer and carefully edited and designed with her collaboration. While there have been many publications of Mark's photographs over the years, most are out of print and of limited scope; Exposure will therefore stand as the most definitive retrospective of Mary Ellen Mark's career in print. It will include many of her iconic photographs (such as Federico Fellini on the set of Fellini Satyricon, 1969, Tiny in Her Halloween Costume, 1983, The Damm Family in Their Car, 1987), but also little-known images from Mark's archive. The book begins with introductions by Weston Naef and Mary Ellen Mark, followed by the photographs, most reproduced either one per page or one per spread and each accompanied solely by a caption consisting of title and date. The sequencing of the images is personal and organic rather than chronological or by subject, in order to suggest a dialogue among the pictures and to enhance their similarities and differences in terms of subject, composition, or tone. Concluding the book is an interview with Mark in which she discusses her career and explains in a conversational tone the stories behind some of the photographs in the book. Scopophilia, which consists of over 400 photographs culled from Goldin’s career, pairs her own autobiographical images with new photographs of paintings and sculpture from the Louvre’s collection. Organized around themes of love and desire, Scopophilia, which means “the love of looking,” reflects on Goldin’s intensely personal photographs, as well as the unique permission given to the artist to photograph freely throughout the Louvre Museum. Of this project, Goldin explains, “Desire awoken by images is the project’s true starting point. It is about the idea of taking a picture of a sculpture or a painting in an attempt to bring it to life.”

Ebbets nació en 1905 Gadsden, Alabama. Se compró su primera cámara a la edad de ocho años poniendo a cuenta de su madre en una farmacia local.Por la década de 1930 Ebbets era un fotógrafo muy conocido y tenía un trabajo publicado en los principales periódicos de todo el país, incluyendo el New York Times. Cuando primero me tope con este trabajo de Jorge Canales en una tutoría de un programa de fotografía contemporánea acá en México, inmediatamente me pareció una propuesta relevante y en búsqueda de complejizar la valoración de la fotografía como arte y como documento de la realidad. En estas imágenes vemos a un grupo de mujeres, empaquetadas, envueltas, “muertas”. En otra vemos el objeto fotográfico, la cámara, o posible asesino de éstas. Asesino, irónicamente, de sus identidades. Quiénes son estas mujeres, quién es el fotógrafo, qué hacen en el bosque de Jorge Canales. En palabras del mismo Jorge estas imágenes son “parte de una imagen ya establecida, ya conformada de la fotografía de identificación, (…) parte de un procedimiento de dejar al empleado anónimo del estudio fotográfico disparar el obturador y manufacturar el objeto” logrando así poner en dilema el acto fotográfico y de la imagen misma ya que nadie es el autor y nadie esta fotografiado. Este poner en aprieto el acto fotográfico (el físico y mental) es lo que este trabajo cuestiona, invitándoos a reflexionar sobre el estado contemporáneo de la fotografía; un estado boscoso y lleno de mas preguntas que respuestas.

When I first came across this work of Jorge Canales in a mentoring program of contemporary photography here in Mexico , I immediately thought it was a relevant proposal seeking the assessment of photography as art and as a document of reality. In these images we see a group of women, packed, wrapped, "dead." In another we see the photographic object, camera, or the possible murderer of them. Murderer, ironically, of their identities. Who are these women, who is the photographer, what they do in the forest of Jorge Canales. In the words of Jorge these images are "part of an image already established, and made the photo ID (...) part of a process of letting the anonymous employee photo studio shutter release and manufacture the object" and to achieving dilemma in the photographic act and the image itself because nobody is the author and no one is photographed. This embarrass the photographic act (physical and mental),is what this study questions, inviting you to reflect on the contemporary state of photography, a state filled with more questions than answers.

Light Painting Photography can be traced back to the year 1914 when Frank Gilbreth, along with his wife Lillian Moller Gilbreth, used small lights and the open shutter of a camera to track the motion of manufacturing and clerical workers. The Gilbreth’s did not create the photographs as an artistic endeavor; they instead were studying what they called “work simplification”. The Gilbreth’s were working on developing ways to increase employee output and simplify their jobs. While they were not using light painting as an artistic medium they did produce the first known light painting photographs.

10x15 is a bimestral online magazine dedicated to contemporary photopraphy. They are virtual photo albums that remind the ones the photo lab gave us for free years ago, each time we developed a 35mm film roll.Each number is a monograph, which theme is chosen by 10x15 team. As curators we make a selection of renowned and not-so-renowned (yet) photographers that we admire. We intend to spread their works while giving their images a new interpretation.

Mauricio Palos nació en San Luis Potosí. Tuvo su primer trabajo relacionado con la fotografía a la edad de los 20 años,cuando trabajaba como jefe de departamento de los fotógrafos en el diario mexicano llamado La Jornada San Luis.Tiene una licenciatura en Investigación de Mercados, y ha sido reconocido como un "Experto en Marketing" y "Especialista en Marketing" en la Universidad Europea de Madrid, España, donde también tomó cursos de fotoperiodismo. Mientras trabaja en estrecha colaboración con los inmigrantes de América del Sur, Europa del Este y la India en los restaurantes y bares, fue cuando Palos comenzó a interesarse en la documentación de la forma de vida de los inmigrantes, y las causas y efectos de la inmigración en el individuo y la comunidad.Desde entonces, ha estado investigando y documentando la vida de los inmigrantes, pero sobre todo tratando de entender la decisión que la gente hizo al salir de su país y empezar de nuevo en un lugar totalmente extraño, frente a las barreras del idioma y la discriminación social. Mauricio Palos was born in San Luis Potosi. He had his first photography-related job at the age of 20 years-old, when he worked as a chief photographers department in the Mexican newspaper called La Jornada San Luis. He has a degree in Marketing Research, and has been recognized as an "Expert in Marketing" and "Specialist in Marketing" in the Universidad Europea de Madrid, Spain, where he also took photojournalism courses.While working closely with immigrants from South America, Eastern Europe and India in restaurants and bars, that Palos began to become interested in documenting the immigrant lifestyle, and the causes and effects of immigration on the individual and community. Since then, he has been researching and documenting immigrants’ lives, but mostly trying to understand the decision that people made to leave their country and start over again in a completely alien place, facing language barriers and social discrimination. A project that he have been working on for 3 years, and planning to continue exploring their lives in USA.

La exposición cuenta con tres cuadros rara vez vistos por René Magritte (dos prestados de la Colección Menil, Houston).Toma su nombre de una revista publicada por Magritte entre 1951 y 1965, en el que recogió las ideas de diferentes épocas y lugares, relacionándolos entre sí por medio de hilos de pensamiento compartidos. En la exposición, Thomas Demand reúne obras de artistas cuya preocupación con el mundo natural se conectan a través de la distancia espacial y temporal de su punto de partida, que es la obra de Magritte.Thomas Demand ha seleccionado una amplia variedad de esculturas, fotografías y películas para la exposición, que serán instalados en los espacios íntimos definido por las paredes del laberinto basado en un dibujo del artista Martin Boyce.

The exhibition features three rarely seen paintings by René Magritte (two on loan from The Menil Collection, Houston). It takes its name from a journal published by Magritte between 1951 and 1965, in which he collected ideas from different times and places, relating them to one another by way of shared threads of thought. In the exhibition, Thomas Demand gathers works by artists whose concern with the natural world connects them across spatial and temporal distances to his starting point, which is Magritte’s work.Thomas Demand has selected a wide variety of sculptures, photographs, and films for the exhibition, which will be installed in intimate spaces defined by labyrinthine walls based on a drawing by the artist Martin Boyce.

Jen Bekman opened her pocket-sized gallery on the Lower East Side in 2003 with the mission of supporting emerging artists and collectors, and she's made a name for herself doing just that. 20x200 takes the mission one step further, making art available for everyone.On a Sunday night back in January 2007, Jen came up with a formula:  (limited editions x low prices) + the internet = art for everyone.

It was the big idea, but she couldn't make it all add up on her own. All fired up, she managed to convince some of the greatest people ever to help complete the equation.20x200 has received a lot of attention since Jen first mentioned it in GOOD Magazine back in April 2007. Lola Álvarez Bravo (1907 – 1993) was a Mexican photographer. She was a key figure (along with Tina Modotti, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and her husband Manuel Álvarez Bravo) in Mexico's post-revolution renaissance.Inspired by such photographers as Edward Weston and Tina Modotti, Lola established a successful independent career. For 50 years, she photographed a wide variety of subjects, making documentary images of daily life in Mexico's villages and city streets and portraits of great leaders from various countries. She also experimented with photomontage and taught photography at the prestigious Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City.

El Paraty em Foco nació por el encanto de los italianos Giancarlo Mecarelli fotógrafo de Paraty. Después de visitar la ciudad durante la 2 ª edición de la FLIP, Mecarelli y su esposa, Maxime Delmotte, decidieron en 2005 abrir la Galería Zoom y crear em Paraty Foco - Festival Internacional de Fotografía , que en la actualidad es una de las mayores iniciativas culturales en el país relacionadas con la fotografía.Hoy en día, el evento es una asociación entre la Galería y Estudio zoom Magdalena. La Casa Magdalena es mantenida por el fotógrafo y productor cultural Cannabrava IATA. The Paraty em Foco was born by the enchantment of the Italian photographer Giancarlo Mecarelli for Paraty.
