Andrés Asturias es un reconocido fotógrafo guatemalteco, quien a trabajado en diferentes ramas de la fotografía y esta es la entrevista que nos dio para nuestro blog.
Antes de empezar queremos agradecerte la oportunidad de entrevistarte.
Primero quisiera preguntarte
¿Cómo empezaste en la fotografía? Y como esto cambió tu vida.
Fue una enfermedad que me cambió la vida (yo jugaba tenis a un nivel casi profesional) y
a partir de esta enfermedad tuve que dejar el deporte y encontré la fotografía. Sin buscarlo
encontré de un día para otra la pasión por la fotografía y la comunicación visual, cosa que hoy
hago con una pasión y dedicación completa.
¿Qué es lo más importante para ti a la hora de tomar o hacer una fotografía?
Que trasmita algo: una emoción, unas idea, algo. Lo que busco es mostrar algo interesante
desde un punto de vista diferente.
¿De donde viene la inspiración para realizar tus fotos?
De muchas cosas. Estoy siempre observando y viendo, en mi mente proceso imágenes y estoy
siempre pensando. En algunos casos tomo fotos espontáneas, pero la mayoría de ellas son
estudiadas y pensadas con anterioridad como una serie de fotografías, como un conjunto de
fotos que intentan trasmitir una idea. El buen cine es una gran inspiración y motivación.
¿Cómo trabajas tu proceso creativo?
No hay proceso creativo. Es parte integral del ser humano: o lo tiene o no lo tienes. Y en mi
caso siempre esta sucediendo, todo el día, todo los días. Generalmente ,me vienen muchas
ideas en el carro cuando estoy en el tráfico.
¿Cómo crees que la fotografía se asemeja o se diferencia de otras disciplinas artísticas?
Lo interesante de la foto y el cine es que trabajas con elementos reales visibles. Uno puede
inventarse cosas, transmitir ideas, pero a la larga y en la mayoría de los casos, estas usando
cosas tangibles y concretas que tienes que mostrar desde un punto de vista diferente para
llamar la atención del público.
¿Qué consejo les puedes dar a los nuevos fotógrafos o a los fotógrafos que están empezando?
Tomar entre 100 y 200 fotos todos los días. Y exigirse uno mismo, el cliente comercial, o
el “experto” de arte no tiene idea que es una buena fotografía y generalmente acepta cualquier
cosa, es responsabilidad
de cada fotógrafo exigirse a si mismo a mejorar cada día.
¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre la fotografía en Guatemala?
Que va en buen camino. Creo que iniciativas como La Fototeca están cambiando este
panorama y de ahí van a salir unos excelentes fotógrafos y artistas.
El taller que impartirás en La Fototeca es sobre moda, ¿qué te gusta de la Fotografía de Moda?
Que es ese mundo donde podes inventar cualquier cosa y todo esta permitido. En otro tipo de
fotos hay limitaciones de que se puede hacer y que no se puede hacer, pero en la fotografía
de moda no lo hay. Más extravagante, más loca, más diferente la foto mejor! Todo esta
permitido, no importando lo absurdo que sea.

Before we start, we would like to thank you for the opportunity to interview you, it´s a great pleasure.First I'd like to ask you
How did you started in photography? And how did this changed your life.
It was a disease that changed my life (I was playing tennis at an almost professional level) and
from this disease I had to leave the sport and it was then when I found photography. Without looking for it
I
found, from one day to another, the passion for photography and visual communication, which today I
do with passion and complete dedication.
What is the most important thing to you when make or take a picture?
To transmit something, an emotion, a thought, something. What I seek is to show something interesting from a different point of view.
Where does the inspiration come from when you take photos?
From many things. I am always looking and seeing things, in my mind I process images and I'm always thinking. In some cases I take spontaneous shots, but most of them are
previously studied and designed as a series of photographs, as a set of pictures that try to transmit an idea. Good cinema is a great inspiration and motivation.
How do you work your creative process?
There is no creative process. It is an integral part of human being, either you have it or you don’t. And in my case is always going on, all day, every day. Generally, I have many
ideas in the car when I'm in traffic.
Do you think photography is similar or different from other art forms?
The interesting thing about photography and film is that you work with real visible elements. One can
invent things, transmit ideas, but eventually and in most cases, you are using
tangible and specific things that you can show from a different perspective to
call the public attention.
What advice would you give new photographers or photographers who are starting out?
Take 100 to 200 photos each day. Demand yourself, the business client, or
the art "expert" has no idea what good picture is and generally accepts any
thing, is the responsibility of each photographer to demand himself to improve every day.
What is your opinion about photography in Guatemala?
That it is on a good track. I believe that initiatives such as La Fototeca are changing this
environment and from there are going to emerge some excellent photographers and artists.
The workshop that you are giving at La Fototeca is about fashion, what do you like about Fashion Photography?
It is a world where you can invent anything and everything is allowed. In another type of
photographs are restrictions in the things that you can and cannot do, but in fashion photography is not like that. The more bizarre, craziest and different the better! Everything is
allowed, no matter how absurd it is.
